William Barret Travis and James Butler Bonham were both born and spent their boyhood days near the present town of Saluda, South Carolina. In those days it was part of what was known as Edgefield District, but since 1895 Saluda has also been a separate county.
Flat Grove, Bonham's birthplace, is nearby the town of Saluda, and is the only home of an Alamo defender still in existence. It is maintained by the local historical society which also operates a museum and library across the street from the court house. There, visitors will find a full repository of information, not only on Travis and Bonham , but on all other aspects of the rich history of Saluda County.
